Spotlight On Excellence: Discover Lupa Zoo

Welcome to another edition of Get Lost in Ludlow, where we uncover the best local spots to explore, learn, and make memories.

This week, we’re heading to Lupa Zoo — Ludlow’s own wildlife treasure that’s been delighting families for decades. The Zoo is officially open for this season beginning this Friday, April 10.

Read on below:

A Community Gem with Heart – Lupa Zoo isn’t just another zoo. Founded by Henry and Joan Lupa, it started as their private animal collection and evolved into a public nonprofit dedicated to conservation, education, and family fun. What sets it apart is its intimate, walkable layout — you can explore at your own pace while staying close to the animals and exhibits. It feels personal, not overwhelming.

Animals and Experiences You’ll Love – From zebras and otters to monkeys, sloths, and emus, Lupa Zoo offers a diverse mix of wildlife. The Primates Building and indoor habitats give close-up views of small mammals and reptiles, while the outdoor areas feature hands-on interactions with friendly goats, sheep, and other domestic animals. Kids will love the splash pad, musical instruments, outdoor play areas, and feeding opportunities that make every visit interactive and memorable.

Education Meets Fun – Lupa Zoo goes beyond entertainment. Through interpretive signs, keeper talks, the Conservation Garden, and school programs, it teaches respect for animals and the environment. As a nonprofit, the zoo prioritizes community outreach with field trips, themed weekends, and special safety and education days where local, state, and federal experts share lessons on environmental resources and community safety.

Seasonal Magic (Mid-April to Late November) – Open from mid-April through the last weekend in November (weather permitting), Lupa Zoo hosts family events, educational programs, and themed weekends throughout the season. Check their calendar for special activities — you won’t want to miss the unique community partnerships and hands-on learning opportunities.

A Fun Fact to Share – Here’s something surprising: Lupa Zoo began as a private collection. Its transformation into a public wildlife park reflects decades of dedication from the Lupa family and Ludlow’s community spirit. Perfect for Families – The zoo’s compact size makes it ideal for young children. Kids learn through safe, hands-on encounters with animals like chinchillas, porcupines, and nonvenomous snakes, then gain perspective seeing a 2-ton American bison just 30 feet away. This contrast helps children understand wildlife in a meaningful way.

First-Time Visitor Tips

  • Plan for 2-4 hours — it’s the perfect length for families.
  • Arrive early for quieter paths and scheduled keeper talks.
  • Wear comfortable shoes, bring a stroller for little ones, and grab animal food at the entrance.
  • Parking, restrooms, and concessions are all available on-site.

Lupa Zoo remains a cherished part of Ludlow’s identity — rooted in family values, community pride, and a shared love for wildlife. Whether you’re a longtime resident or new to town, it’s the perfect spot to get lost in nature and create memories that last. Plan your visit today!
