There’s a new coffee shop brewing in Town; Ludlow Coffee Co.!

Thanks to the vision and hard work of husband-and-wife duo Matthew and Kayla Gates and their longtime friend Steph Defina, visitors have a new place to relax or gather with friends over a cup of coffee.

Read on below:

When Kayla Gates and Steph Defina met at Simmons University, they dreamed of opening a business together. Years later, after spending some time in Boston, Kayla and her husband Matt returned to Ludlow. Matt had been working for a nonprofit in the city, often commuting four days a week. Faced with the decision of returning to school or embarking on a new venture, the couple decided it was the perfect time to plant roots closer to home and turn their dream into a reality.

The result; Ludlow Coffee Co. at 135 East St., an independently owned coffee shop where high-quality coffee and community come together. Whether you’re stopping in for a morning coffee, an afternoon study session, or an evening event, Ludlow’s newest coffee shop is built on connection, community, and the dream of three friends who call this town home.

The shop is designed to feel less like a business and more like a living room — bright, comfortable and inviting, complete with natural light, Wi-Fi, couches and comfortable decorations.

The shop is already hosting events that draw the community together such as book club and Bingo. They hope that in the future, they can host vendor fairs spotlighting local crafters and businesses and one day, expand to serve a late-night menu, creating a cozy spot for studying or socializing after hours.

Another important part of their mission is staying local. They source baked goods from Chmura’s Bakery, and are eager to collaborate with other businesses.

Matt, Kayla and Steph wish to share their appreciation for the Ludlow Health Department, specifically Paulina Matusik, who helped them navigate paperwork and permitting so they could open. They credit her help as an important part of bringing their dream to life.

“If you ever want to know how small the world is, open a coffee shop,” said Matthew Gates. “It’s amazing how many people you’ve crossed paths with.”
